- Through the 50 Schools in 50 States Initiative, the Surgeon General
will visit at least one school in each of the 50 states, Washington,
D.C., and Puerto Rico during his tenure to talk with students about the
dangers of risky behaviors and the benefits of healthy choices.

March 2006 Vice Admiral Richard Carmona visited with students
of A.C. Moore Elementary School in Columbia, SC as part of his "50 Schools in 50 States" initiative. The Surgeon General spoke with the children about the dangers of inactivity and smoking, and encouraged them to lead health
lifestyles.
