The bar graph shows the prevalence of overweight among U.S. children and adolescents. Overweight is defined as having a gender- and age-specific Body Mass Index greater than or equal to the 95th percentile. The sources of the data are the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Health Statistics, National Health Examination Survey, and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

During the 1963 to 1970 NHES II and III surveys, 4 percent of children aged 6 to 11 years were overweight, and 5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years were overweight.

During the 1971 to 1974 NHANES I survey, 4 percent of children aged 6 to 11 years were overweight, and 6 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years were overweight.

During the 1976 to 1980 NHANES II survey, 7 percent of children aged 6 to 11 years were overweight, and 5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years were overweight.

During the 1988 to 1994 NHANES III survey, 11 percent of children aged 6 to 11 years were overweight, and 11 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years were overweight.

During the 1999 NHANES survey, 13 percent of children aged 6 to 11 years were overweight, and 14 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 19 years were overweight.
