Statement by Rear Admiral Steven K. Galson Acting Surgeon General Regarding the Death of Former Surgeon General William H. Stewart

The health community has suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of William H. Stewart M.D., former Surgeon General.

Dr. Stewart served as Surgeon General from October 1965 to July 1969. As a Public Health Service officer, Dr. Stewart was a life-long advocate of the health of the American public. Dr. Stewart took on the high-profile and critical task of certifying the nation’s hospitals for compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Dr. Stewart began his medical career in Louisiana and was a great asset to the medical profession.

Dr. Stewart was an outstanding leader and a great American, and I extend my sincere condolences to his family.
