Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence: PHS Clinical Practice Guideline

Screen for Tobacco Use Status

To screen for tobacco use status, follow these steps: Does patient now use tobacco? If the answer is yes, is the patient now willing to quit? If yes, provide appropriate tobacco dependence treatments, if the answer is no, promote motivation to quit. If the patient does not use tobacco now, did patient once use tobacco? If yes, prevent relapse, if no, no intervention required--encourage continued abstinence.

Recent surveys show that 25 percent of all adult Americans smoke.
