National Prevention Council

NPC Council SealThe National Prevention Council, created through the Affordable Care Act, comprises 20 federal departments, agencies and offices and is chaired by the Surgeon General. The National Prevention Council developed the National Prevention Strategy with input from the Prevention Advisory Group, stakeholders, and the public.

One year after the release of the National Prevention Strategy, the Council released the National Prevention Council Action Plan, which builds from the vision, goal, recommendations, and actions of the landmark National Prevention Strategy. This Action Plan highlights important opportunities that the National Prevention Council and its diverse member departments—representing sectors such as housing, transportation, education, environment, and defense—are creating to ensure the health, well-being, and resilience of the American people.

National Prevention Council Members

Council members are cabinet secretaries, chairs, directors, or administrators of federal departments. Such high profile involvement demonstrates an unprecedented commitment to prevention and wellness in the U.S. health care system.

National Prevention Council Action Plan: Implementing the National Prevention Strategy

The National Prevention Council Action Plan outlines the federal commitment to implementing the vision, goal, priorities, and recommendations of the nation’s first ever National Prevention Strategy. This Action Plan is a direct result of the National Prevention Council’s leadership and highlights the important contributions that each member department is making to ensure the health, well-being, and resilience of the American people.

Healthy Aging in Action (HAIA)

Healthy Aging in Action (HAIA) identifies recommendations and actions to promote healthy aging and improve health and well-being later in life. The report highlights federal and nonfederal policies and programs that reflect the National Prevention Strategy’s approach of targeting prevention and wellness efforts to promote healthy aging to further advance the Strategy for an aging society.

National Prevention Council Annual Status Reports

Every year, the Council submits a report describing national progress in meeting specific prevention, health promotion, and public health goals defined in the National Prevention Strategy to the President and the relevant committees of Congress.
